| T'n'C Farms is owned and operated by Trudy McCall and Cathy
Merkley. We are full time alpaca breeders. Ours is a smaller operation that
emphasizes good conformation and strives to continuously improve fleece characteristics
and fibre production. |
|
Trudy is married to Cory McCall. They have
four children Kaitlyn, Jace, Leathan and Tess. They live forty kilometres northeast of
Lloydminster.
Trudy has been involved in agriculture and livestock production her whole life. She
studied Biology at the University of Saskatchewan and has her Animal Health Technician
Certificate. |
| T 'n' C Farms has completed a new alpaca barn
next door to the McCalls. It has a fibre studio and living quarters for Cathy in the
loft. Cathy has been a knitter all of her life. In the spring of 2000 she attended
an InternationalAlpaca Judging School in Peru and subsequently qualified as an
International fleece and halter judge for huacaya and suri. Cathy
is also a certified halter and fleece judge under the AOBA system. |

| With Cathy's lifelong interest in fibre arts
combined with Trudy's agricultural background, we began to look for a new venture we could
do together. After exploring many possibilities from elk to ginseng we stumbled upon
alpacas and found they were perfectly suited to our needs. Easy to care for and
family friendly with an exquisite fleece for an end product harvested without slaughter
convinced us that alpacas were for us. In the spring of 1996 we bought two bred
females and a male and we are now well on our way in the alpaca business. We have
learned many things about alpacas in the past few years. We have learned that
alpacas really are a low maintenance animal relative to other livestock but still require
a lot of attention. We have learned that bags of alpaca fibre rapidly accumulate
even if you only have a few animals. We have learned that an industry in its infancy
has some growing pains and thanks to some hard work from many individuals, progress is
made. Perhaps most importantly we have learned that many of the people we have met
through alpacas have become life long friends.
We are committed to the alpaca industry long term and both work very hard to strengthen
the industry as a whole. Cathy is a member of the
communication committee of Alpaca Canada. She is also on
the industry committee for the Natural Fibre Centre and Test Lab which is being
developed at Olds College. Trudy is a past member of the Board of Directors for the
Canadian Camelid Fibre Co-operative, Ltd. She is on
the show committee for Alpaca Canada. We are both involved in organizing the
Lloydminster Fibre Fair. For more
information on these events, go to the coming events section. |
